Long-tailed Bunting (English spelling)

Japanese: ホオジロ(頰白) - ホオジロ（英語表記）long‐tailed bunting

A passerine bird of the family Emberizidae (illustration). Total length is about 17 cm. It is slightly larger than a sparrow, with a reddish-brown body overall and a black vertical stripe on its back, black behind the eyes, and a conspicuous white brow and jaw line. The throat is gray. The female is less chestnut-colored than the male, has brown behind the eyes, and light yellowish-brown brows. When excited, the male ruffles the feathers on its crown. It is found in eastern Asia, and breeds in China, southeastern Siberia, Primorsky Krai, the Korean Peninsula, Japan, and other places. In Japan, it is found north of the Satsunan Islands, is a summer bird in Hokkaido, and is a resident or migratory bird south of Honshu.

スズメ目ホオジロ科の鳥（イラスト）。全長約17cm。スズメより少し大きく，全体に赤褐色で背面には黒い縦斑があり，眼の後方は黒く，白い眉斑（びはん）と顎線（がくせん）にはさまれて目だつ。のどは灰色。雌は雄よりくり色みが少なく，眼の後方は褐色で，眉斑は淡黄褐色。雄は興奮すると冠部の羽毛を逆立てる。アジア東部に分布し，中国，シベリア南東部，沿海州，朝鮮半島，日本などで繁殖する。日本では薩南諸島以北に分布し，北海道では夏鳥，本州以南では留鳥か漂鳥である。
