Japanese: スズメバチ(胡蜂) - スズメバチ（英語表記）hornet

A general term for insects of the order Hymenoptera, family Vespidae. Many species of hornets are found mainly in temperate and tropical regions. The largest species of wasp found in Japan, the giant hornet Vespa mandarinia , is a worker wasp with a body length of around 30 mm, with some females exceeding 40 mm. Its overall color is reddish brown, with a black thorax and a black band on each segment of its abdomen. It chews wood and other materials to build large nests in tree cavities or between the walls of houses. The nests can reach a diameter of 70 to 80 cm.

膜翅目スズメバチ科の昆虫の総称。スズメバチ類は主として温･熱帯地方に多くの種が分布する。日本産のハチ類中最大種オオスズメバチVespa mandariniaは働きバチで，体長30mm内外，雌では40mmを超えるものもいる。全体に赤褐色で，胸部は黒色，腹部の各節に1本の黒帯がある。樹木の空洞，人家の壁間などに木材などをそしゃくして，それを材料に大きな巣をつくる。巣は直径70～80cmに達することもある。
