Anti-Kuomintang riots broke out among Taiwanese residents in 1947. In October 1945, the Kuomintang government's Taiwan Acquisition Committee, led by Taiwan Provincial Chief Executive Chen Yi, took over administrative power from the Japanese colonial authorities. Initially, the Taiwanese people welcomed the return to their motherland. However, social unrest ensued as native Taiwanese (Han Chinese who had been living in Taiwan since before World War II) were excluded from the provincial government, corruption was rampant in the confiscation of Japanese assets, and officials and soldiers from the mainland were incompetent and did not observe discipline. Furthermore, runaway inflation progressed, and discontent among native Taiwanese rapidly increased. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
