A clothing accessory used to protect the shins and to finish the hems of hakama (Japanese trousers). Since ancient times, samurai made shin guards from fibers taken from the stems of the mallow plant, which were called ichibi habaki. Commoners, especially in rural areas, made shin guards from rice straw. After the Muromachi period, gaiters appeared and they became the same thing with different names, but as gaiters began to be made from cloth, the distinction between the two became clear. In rural areas, they were used when walking in the snow or rain, or for working in muddy fields, but their use is gradually declining.
