Prince Yamabe, born to a humble mother of immigrant descent, was a prince and served as Nakatsukasakyō (Minister of Central Affairs), but in 772, Empress Inoue and Crown Prince Osabe were dethroned and died an untimely death. Prince Yamabe was made Crown Prince instead at the age of 37, and ascended to the throne in 781 (Tenō 1).
