A West African harp-lute, also known as a kora. A long neck passes through a hemispherical gourd-shaped sounding body covered with a membrane. One end of the string is connected to the top of the neck, and the other end is fixed to the bottom of the neck that protrudes from the sounding body. The 21 strings are divided into left and right (11 strings on the left, 10 on the right) by a notched bridge that stands vertically in the center of the sounding body, and are lined up perpendicular to the membrane. The player holds the instrument by two handles that protrude from the body on either side of the strings, places the bottom of the neck on the ground, and holds the instrument vertically with the stringed end facing the player, and plucks the strings with the thumbs and index fingers of both hands. It is mainly used by professional male Malinke (Mandingo) musicians to accompany stories, chants, and hymns. It is also used for instrumental music. → Related articleGriot Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
