French composer. After graduating from the Naval Academy and entering military service, he began formal music studies at the age of 25. In 1898, at the age of 29, he entered the Schola Cantorum in Paris. He studied under d'Indy and served as a professor at the school from 1902 to 1914, lecturing on counterpoint to Satie and Barès, who were three years his senior. He later taught Martinu as well. After early works heavily influenced by d'Indy and his teacher C. Franck, he showed impressionist brushwork in ballet music such as The Feast of the Spiders (1912), but after a trip to India and Southeast Asia in 1909, he gradually changed his style. He established a dynamic style based on polyphonic writing and his own harmonic idiom. His later works include the opera-ballet Madhumavati (1918), Suite in F for orchestra (1926), choral work Psalm No. 80 (1928), Symphony No. 3, commissioned by Koussevitzky, ballet music Bacchus and Ariadne (both 1930), String Quartet (1932), Symphony No. 4 (1934), String Trio (1937), and many songs.RousselSource : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
