He was the first Japanese to visit the Holy Land, Palestine. His spiritual name was Pedro. He was from Bungo. He studied at the seminary in Arima and stayed with the Jesuits, and in 1614 (Keicho 19) he traveled to Macau with exiled missionaries. He set his sights on a new life, traveling via India and Palestine to Rome. In November 1620, he was ordained as a priest and joined the Jesuits. In 1630, he arrived at Bonotsu via Lubang Island, and in 1638, he snuck into the Tohoku region from Nagasaki, and hid in Mizusawa, under the control of the Sendai Domain, and was captured at the end of that year or early the following year and sent to Edo, where he was tortured to death in July. 聖地パレスティナを訪問した最初の日本人。霊名ペドロ。豊後出身。有馬のセミナリヨに学びイエズス会の同宿となり，1614年(慶長19)追放の宣教師らとマカオに赴く。志を立て，インド，パレスティナ経由でローマに至る。20年11月司祭叙階後にイエズス会に入る。30年ルバング島経由で坊ノ津に着き長崎より東北に潜入，38年仙台藩領水沢に潜伏し同年末ないし翌年初め捕らわれて江戸送りとなり，7月拷問死した。【五野井隆史】
