Ajaccio in Italian. A port city in Corsica, France. Capital of the Corse-du-Sud department. Located on the north shore of the Gulf of Ajaccio in the middle of the west coast. The town is divided in two by a promontory with a fortress at its tip. The northern part is the port and the old town, and there is a memorial museum at the birthplace of Napoleon I. The southwestern part is a residential area with many green spaces, villas, and hotels. Since the reclamation of the marshes at the mouth of the river, the southeastern part has developed as a resort, winter and summer resort, and tourist destination, and is also active as a port. The town has ancient origins, having been the seat of a bishopric in the 7th century and rebuilt by Genoa in 1492. In the 16th century, it briefly belonged to King Henry II of France, and in 1768 the whole of Corsica became French territory. It is the administrative, commercial, fishing, transportation, and tourist center of the island. The airport has been modernized and has regular flights to Paris, Nice, and other cities. There are also regular passenger ship and ferry services to Marseille and Nice. The cathedral (16th century) near the south coast has a marble altar donated by Napoleon's sister, Duchess Luc. The palace of Napoleon's uncle, Cardinal Fesch, was donated to the city and is used as an art museum. Population: 59,318 (1990).
