First, Srednyaya Aziya (meaning Middle Asia) referred to the area occupied by the four West Turkestan republics of Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan, and was usually referred to as Srednyaya Aziya i Kazakhstan (meaning Central Asia and Kazakhstan) to refer to the whole of Central Asia within the Soviet Union.
