Srednyaya Aziya (English spelling)

...The Soviet Union used two terms to refer to Central Asia. First, Srednyaya Aziya (meaning Middle Asia) referred to the area occupied by the four West Turkestan republics of Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan, and was usually referred to as Srednyaya Aziya i Kazakhstan (meaning Central Asia and Kazakhstan) to refer to the whole of Central Asia within the Soviet Union. Second, Tsentral'naya Aziya (meaning Central Asia) referred to Central Asia outside the Soviet Union, namely East Turkestan, the Dzungar steppe, Tibet, and Mongolia.
