Humans began weaving baskets in the Paleolithic period. Clay fragments from the Late Paleolithic period with impressions of basket weave patterns were discovered in the Gamble Cave in Kenya, Africa. These are believed to be the remains of clay attached to the inside of a basket that was subjected to heat from fire.
