It is a university town located in the southeast of Sweden, 70 km north of the capital Stockholm. It has a population of 191,110 (2001). It has a comprehensive university founded in 1477, as well as a medical school, an agricultural school, and various research institutes. In recent years, the pharmaceutical, printing and publishing, and food industries have been established, giving it the appearance of an industrial city. The cathedral, built in 1435, is the largest in Scandinavia, and the Silver Bible in the Carolina Library, dating back to the 500s, is world-famous. The spring student festival on April 30th is also one of the city's attractions. [Koko Nakajima] historyUppsala was formerly called Aros or Östra Aros, and its birthplace, Old Uppsala, is located 5 km north of the city. It flourished as a religious and trade center from ancient times to the early Middle Ages. In the 13th century, a bishopric was established there, but due to repeated fires, the seat of the archbishopric was transferred to Aros in 1273, at which time it was renamed Uppsala. Since then, churches, monasteries, and cathedrals have been built, and it has become a religious hub, but in the mid-16th century, its population was just over 200. Since the founding of Uppsala University in 1477, it has been the center of academic learning in Sweden. A major fire in 1702 reduced most of the city to ashes, but it was quickly rebuilt. In the mid-19th century, with a population of just under 5,000, the city grew into a medium-sized city thanks to the development of transportation.
