Japanese: 家形埴輪 - いえがたはにわ

Also called a Haniwa family, this is a type of Haniwa that imitates the shape of a dwelling. Along with the Kaokumonkyo (mirror with house patterns) excavated from the Samita Takarazuka Tomb in Nara Prefecture, it is a valuable resource that tells us about the shape of prehistoric dwellings. The eight Haniwa excavated from the Akabori Chausuyama Tomb in Gunma Prefecture are pit dwellings, consisting of a main house with a gabled roof and a side house with a tatsuogi pole, and also show the dwelling structure of a local feudal lord. One with a komochi roof and entrances on all four sides was excavated from the Saitobaru Tomb in Miyazaki Prefecture.

埴輪家ともいう。住居の形態を模した埴輪の一種。奈良県の佐味田宝塚古墳出土の家屋文鏡 (かおくもんきょう) などとならび，先史時代の住居形態を伝える貴重な資料である。群馬県の赤堀茶臼山古墳から出土した8個の埴輪は竪穴住居で，切妻造の屋根に堅魚木をあげた主屋と副屋から成り，地方豪族の住居構成をも示している。宮崎県の西都原古墳からは四方に出入口をつけた子持屋根をもつものも出土している。
