Hidefumi - Sufficiency

Japanese: 秀文 - しゅうぶん

Year of birth: Year of birth and death unknown. He is believed to have been a painter who came to Japan from the Joseon Dynasty in the early Muromachi period. He is generally believed to have been named Lee and to have been the founder of the later Soga school, but there is no definite proof. He was once confused with Shubun, but they are different people. The only standard work discovered recently, the "Sumitake Painting Album" (private collection), has a seal that reads "Yongle-jiacheng 20th year, came to Japan at age 22, and copied by Shubun from Hokuyo." This date corresponds to the 31st year of the Oei era (1424) in the Japanese calendar, and since Shubun returned to Japan from Korea in that year, it is believed that he was a painter who came to Japan with Shubun when he returned to Japan. This is a key figure in considering the relationship between Muromachi ink painting and Joseon painting, which has been vaguely pointed out until now. There are several other works that are said to have been written by Shubun, such as the "Landscape Screen" (owned by the Cleveland Museum of Art, USA) and the "Rin Hejing" (owned by the Kyoto National Museum), but their styles are quite different. <References> Hiroshi Naito, "Thoughts on Excellent Writing" (Museum, No. 365)

生年：生没年不詳
室町前期に李朝朝鮮より来日した画家と推測されている。一般に姓を李,また後の曾我派の祖とするが確証はない。かつては周文と混同されていたが別人である。近年発見された唯一の基準作「墨竹画冊」(個人蔵)には「永楽甲辰二十有二歳次於日本国渡来北陽写秀文」という落款がある。この年記は和暦の応永31(1424)年に相当し,この年周文が朝鮮より帰国しているため,周文が帰国の際,共に来日した画家とも推測されている。従来より漠然と指摘されている室町水墨画と李朝絵画の関係を考えるうえで鍵を握る存在である。他に秀文筆と伝える作品に「山水図屏風」(米・クリーヴランド美術館蔵),「林和靖図」(京都国立博物館蔵)など数点があるが,その作風はかなり異なったものである。<参考文献>内藤浩「秀文考」(『ミュージアム』365号)
