A large perennial plant of the Cyperaceae family. It is found in tropical Asia and Australia. The stems can reach 2m in height. There is a long underground stem, and aboveground stems rise at each node. The leaves form sheaths that encase the stems and are slightly scaly. These stems are dried and woven into mats (known as ampelas). It is cultivated on a large scale in southern China, where it is used for ampelas as well as for packaging and decoration. It is confusingly similar to Cladium nipponense , another species of the Cyperaceae family, which is sometimes called ampelai, but this grows in warm wetlands in western Japan and is not used for mats.

カヤツリグサ科の大型多年草。熱帯アジアからオーストラリアにかけて分布する。茎は高さ 2mに達する。地下に長い地下茎があり，その節ごとに地上茎が立つ。葉は鞘をつくって茎を包み，わずかに鱗片状をなす。この茎を乾かしてむしろ (いわゆるアンペラ) に編む。中国南部で大規模に栽培され，中国ではこのアンペラのほか，包装用や装飾用にも使われるという。なお，同じカヤツリグサ科の別種ネビキグサ Cladium nipponenseをアンペライと呼ぶこともあってまぎらわしいが，これは西日本の暖地の湿地に生じ，むしろなどに利用することはない。
