Jakob Sprenger

German Dominican monk. Born in Rheinfelden, died in Strasbourg. From 1477 to 1488, he served as the abbot of the Dominican Order in Cologne, but from 1481 he became the inquisitor for witch trials, and compiled the records of the trials into the book Malleus Maleficarum (1487), co-authored with Heinrich Krämer (c. 1430-1505, also known as H. Institoris). The book was reprinted many times until the 17th century, and the third part in particular was regarded as the penal code for witch trials in Central Europe, leading to the cruel punishment of torture.

ドイツのドミニコ会士。ラインフェルデンに生まれ，シュトラスブルクに没した。1477‐88年までケルンのドミニコ会副修道院長をつとめたが，81年以後は異端審問官として魔女裁判に君臨，その審問記録をクレーマーHeinrich Krämer(1430ころ‐1505，別名インスティトリスH.Institoris)との共著《魔女への鉄槌》(1487)にまとめた。同書は以後17世紀にいたるまで版を重ね，とくにその第3部は中欧の魔女裁判における刑罰法典とみなされて，残酷な拷問刑罰を発生させた。
