1436-95 German Dominican monk. Born in Rheinfelden, died in Strasbourg. From 1477 to 1488, he served as the abbot of the Dominican Order in Cologne, but from 1481 he became the inquisitor for witch trials, and compiled the records of the trials into the book Malleus Maleficarum (1487), co-authored with Heinrich Krämer (c. 1430-1505, also known as H. Institoris). The book was reprinted many times until the 17th century, and the third part in particular was regarded as the penal code for witch trials in Central Europe, leading to the cruel punishment of torture.
