…Influenced by his father Thomas (1763-1854), a Presbyterian minister who separated from the Church of Scotland, he emigrated to America in 1809 after his father. Influenced by Baptists there, he believed that baptism should be by immersion, that is, by submerging the whole body in water. Later, due to differences of opinion, he left Baptism and founded the Disciples of Christ in 1827. He advocated baptism by immersion, the observance of the sacrament every Sunday, a simple, anti-creedal faith that valued the New Testament, the approach of Christ's second coming, and the priesthood of all believers. …
