The eastern part of the Asian continent, including China, Korea, Japan, and Mongolia. It corresponds to the Orient and Far East in the narrow sense. The majority of the inhabitants are Mongoloid, and have developed in their own way while being influenced by Han culture. The eastern half has a temperate monsoon climate and includes Japan, Korea, and the northeastern, northern, eastern, central, southern, and southwestern regions of China. It is based on intensive rice cultivation (wheat cultivation in the northern half of China), has a high population density, and is highly industrialized. The western half has an arid climate and includes the Mongolian Plateau, Junggar Basin, Tarim Basin, and Tibetan Plateau. It is sparsely populated, mainly involves livestock farming, and industry is almost exclusively limited to light industry.
