Marine sponges - Porifera

Japanese: 海綿動物 - かいめんどうぶつ
Marine sponges - Porifera
〘Noun〙 A classification of animals. The lowest of the Metazoa, excluding protozoa and mesozoa. The basic shape of the body is urn-shaped, and it attaches to other objects at the lower end. The body is soft, and is made up of bone fragments and fibers combined together. It has no nerve cells, sensory cells, or muscle cells. Water enters through many small pores on the surface of the body wall, passes through the gastric stomata, and is expelled from the large stomata at the upper end of the body. Food is taken in through collar cells between the stomata and the gastric cavity. Most are marine, with a few freshwater, and are divided into calcareous sponges and hexactinellids.
