Ambergris - Ambergris

One of the essential oils. It is made by drying stones that occur in the intestines of sperm whales, and is also called ambergris. Ambergris itself has almost no fragrance, but the aromatic components are dissolved in alcohol and used as a fixative. The main aromatic component is a triterpene compound called ambrein. Sperm whales feed on squid, so the keratin called "squid beak" accumulates in their bodies, and this becomes stones and is excreted. This waxy mass with a light specific gravity (about 0.9 to 0.92) is called ambergris, and it is sometimes excreted and floats on the sea or washed up on the beach. It has also been extracted from the bodies of captured whales. However, since the International Whaling Commission (IWC) banned the capture of sperm whales in 1986, ambergris is rarely used today and has been replaced by synthetic fragrances. The largest one ever found weighed 336 pounds (about 152 kilograms).

精油の一つ。マッコウクジラの腸内に発生した結石を乾燥したもので、竜涎香(りゅうぜんこう)ともいう。竜涎香そのものはほとんど香気を有していないが、香気成分をアルコールに溶かして保留剤として用いる。主たる香気成分はアンブレインambreinというトリテルペン化合物である。マッコウクジラはイカを常食にするので「イカのくちばし」といわれる角質が体内に蓄積し、これが結石となって体外に排泄(はいせつ)される。この比重の軽い（0.9～0.92程度）蝋(ろう)状の塊が竜涎香とよばれ、排泄されて海上に浮遊していたり、海浜に打ち上げられていることもある。また、捕獲したクジラの体内から取り出されることもあった。しかし、1986年に国際捕鯨委員会（IWC）によりマッコウクジラの捕獲が禁止されたため、現在アンバーグリスはほとんど使われず、合成香料に置き換えられている。いままでに発見された最大のものは336ポンド（約152キログラム）もあった。
