A deciduous tree of the Juglandaceae (APG classification: Juglandaceae). It is also called Fuji Walnut or Kawa Walnut. It grows to 30 meters tall and 1 meter in diameter. The leaves are pinnately compound with 11-21 leaflets, ovate-oblong to lanceolate, 6-12 cm long, 1.5-4 cm wide, sharply pointed at the tip, and finely serrated edges. It flowers in May. Male flowers are borne on drooping catkins. The bracts are long and end up with two bracteoles and one perianth lobe, and there are 7-10 stamens. Female flowers are borne one at each bract axil, and the perianth is shallowly divided into four lobes. The female inflorescences are also drooping and elongate to 20-30 cm long at the time of fruiting. The samara have large, flattened wings with a width of 2.2 cm. They grow in mountainous areas and valleys, and are distributed from southwestern Hokkaido to Kyushu. They are also found in parts of China. The trunk is straight and the wood is white and light, and is used for crafts, and the leaves are used for medicine.

クルミ科（APG分類：クルミ科）の落葉高木。フジグルミ（藤胡桃）、カワグルミ（川胡桃）ともいう。高さ30メートル、径1メートルに達する。葉は羽状複葉で小葉は11～21枚、卵状長楕円(ちょうだえん)形から披針(ひしん)形、長さ6～12センチメートル、幅1.5～4センチメートル、先は鋭くとがり、縁(へり)に細かい鋸歯(きょし)がある。花期は5月。雄花は下垂する尾状花序につく。包葉が長く伸び、先に小包葉2枚と花被片(かひへん)1枚をつけ、雄しべは7～10本。雌花は包葉の腋(えき)に1個ずつつき、花被は浅く4裂する。雌花序も下垂し、果時に伸長して長さ20～30センチメートルに達する。翼果は小包葉が扁円(へんえん)形の大きな翼となり、幅2.2センチメートル。山地、谷間に生え、北海道南西部から九州にかけて分布する。中国の一部にも分布する。幹はまっすぐで材は白色で軽く、細工物に利用し、葉は薬用とする。
