A bird of the Gruidae family (illustration). Total length is about 130 cm. The body is slate gray, the head and neck are white, and the face is red with exposed skin. The primary and secondary flight feathers are black, but the coverts and tertiary flight feathers are gray, and the tertiary flight feathers are long and cover the back of the body. The legs are dark red. The beak is yellow or greenish yellow. The breeding grounds are the wetlands of southeastern Siberia and northeastern China, but the conditions of the breeding grounds and breeding ecology have not been investigated in detail. It spends the winter in wetlands, rice paddies, and agricultural land in Japan, the Korean Peninsula, and the mouth of the Yangtze River in China.

ツル目ツル科の鳥（イラスト）。全長約130cm。体は石板灰色で，頭頸（とうけい）部は白く，顔は皮膚が裸出して赤い。初列･次列風切は黒いが，雨覆と三列風切は灰色で，三列風切は長くのびて体のうしろをおおっている。脚は暗赤色。くちばしは黄色ないし緑黄色。繁殖地はシベリア南東部と中国東北部の湿地であるが，繁殖地の状態や繁殖生態は詳しく調査されたことがない。日本，朝鮮半島，中国の長江(揚子江)河口などの湿地･水田･農耕地などで越冬している。
