Flexible manufacturing system

FMS is an abbreviation for flexible manufacturing systems. It is also known as flexible manufacturing systems. In mechanical production, the machining of mass-produced parts was automated early on with the development of automatic machine tools and transfer machines. However, the majority of mechanical production (about 75%) involves machining the same parts at one time, with lot sizes of 500 or less, and the issue was how to automate machining for this type of high-mix, low-volume production. In the 1950s, numerically controlled machine tools became widespread, making it possible to automatically machine parts of different shapes just by changing control tapes. In the early 1960s, the DNC system (direct numerical system), a machine tool group management system that centrally controls several to several dozen numerically controlled machine tools using a central computer, was realized, and the level of automation increased even further. In the late 1960s, an automatic transport device for processed parts was added to the system, and this was marketed under the product name Flexible manufacturing system, which was the beginning of the flexible manufacturing system.
