Shinran - Shinran

Japanese:
Shinran - Shinran
A monk from the Kamakura period. Founder of the Jodo Shinshu sect. Posthumously called Kenshin Daishi. After becoming a monk, he often changed his Buddhist name, going by the names Han'en, Shakuku, and Zenshin. After attaining enlightenment through Donran's Other-Power Eko (transfer of power to the deity), he took the name Shinran and Gutoku (foolish monk). At a young age, he entered the school of Jien at Shoren-in Temple, and later trained as a monk at Mount Hiei, and also traveled to Nara to study. He retreated to Rokkakudo, where he was inspired by the writings of Prince Shotoku, and converted to the faith of Honen, devoting himself to the teachings of Other-Power Nembutsu. Later, with Honen's permission, he married Eshinni. In 1207, he was implicated in Honen's Shogen persecution and exiled to Echigo. After receiving the imperial pardon, he traveled throughout Shinano, Shimotsuke, and Hitachi, working to spread the teachings of Shinran, and wrote Kyogyo Shinsho in Inada, Hitachi, laying the foundations of Shinshu. At the age of 60, he returned to Kyoto and built Nishigori-ji Temple in Kibe, Omi. In Kyoto, he moved from place to place, working to spread the teachings of Shinran and to write. His philosophy was said to be based on faith, as opposed to Honen's Nembutsu, and was thoroughly faith-centered, with absolute faith in Amida Buddha being the key to attaining rebirth in the Pure Land. His symbolic expression, "akunin shoki," is also highly regarded as a unique Shinran philosophy. His books include Jodo Monruijusho, Gutokusho, Ichinen Tanen Mon'i, and Sanjo Wasan. The Tannisho is a record of Shinran's words and deeds. The Zenshin Shonin E, which depicts the life of Shinran, was created in 1295 with words by Kakunyo and illustrations by Jōga. Based on this, many Illustrated Biographies of Shinran Shonin were created in the 13th and 14th centuries.
