Born: August 20, 1786 in Concepcion
[Died] November 22, 1854. Valparaiso. Chilean soldier and politician. President (in office 1831-41). Joined the army in 1805 and fought in the War of Independence. After independence (18), he played an active role as a conservative leader, overthrew the liberal leader R. Freire, and led the revolution of 1829-30, serving two consecutive terms as president. During his term, he had a capable cabinet including D. Portales, and achieved outstanding results in the formulation of the constitution (33), the development of education and finances, and led the country to victory in the war against Peru and Bolivia (36-39).
