...The son of a samurai, he aspired to restore his family name, which had fallen into disrepair during the Meiji Restoration, and studied at Shubunkan, Rose School, and Brown School in Yokohama. Influenced by missionaries, he converted to Christianity in 1873 and became a representative of the Yokohama Band. He graduated from the Japan Christian Theological Seminary in 1878, and founded the Shitaya Church in 1879 and Ichibancho Church in 1887.
