... In contrast to the history of America (Hollywood), which sought to develop film as popular entertainment, French cinema had an early desire to elevate film to the level of art. The Film d'Art company, founded in 1907 by the Lafitte brothers, was the first to employ stage artists and popular actors of the time in order to break the commercial deadlock of cheap short films, trick films, and spectacle films. They also adapted original screenplays by famous authors such as Anatole France and Edmond Rostand, as well as masterpieces by literary masters, to capture a new audience of intellectuals, and thus paved the way for ``films d'art'' (art films). (However, some, such as film historian and theorist Maurice Bessy, believe that ``in itself it was merely a reproduction of theater, and ended up leading film in the wrong direction''.) Following the great success of The Assassination of the Duke of Guise (1908), written by playwright Henri Labdan, co-directed by André Calmette and Le Bargy, and starring the great actors of the Comédie-Française, the company produced Notre-Dame de Paris (1911), based on a novel by Hugo, directed by Albert Capellani and starring the great actors of André Antoine's Théâtre Libre, and Les Misérables (1912), and Zola's Germinal, directed by André Antoine. From films such as The Queen (1914) to the masterpiece The Queen (1912) directed by Louis Mercanton and starring the famous actress Sarah Bernhardt, the theatrical literary films known as "Films Dahl" influenced not only Europe but also America (it is well known that Adolph Zukor released The Queen in the US and made it a huge hit, and founded Famous Players, the predecessor of Paramount, modeled on the filmmaking of Films Dahl), marking an epoch in the history of cinema. The aforementioned Pathé film company not only held the distribution rights for all of Films Dahl's works, but also produced them.
