…American settlement leader and educator. He studied at Amherst College and Andover Theological Seminary, and spent six months at Toynbee Hall in London. He was strongly influenced by the pioneer of the settlement movement, Reverend Samuel A. Barnett, and founded the first settlement, Andover House (later renamed Southend House), in Boston in 1891. From there, he played a leading role in the settlement movement that spread throughout the country. The movement was characterized by its establishment of playgrounds, schools, libraries, etc., promotion of neighborhood planning and recreational activities in slums, and its efforts to develop intellectual integration rather than the cultivation of residents' emotions. *Some of the terminology that refers to Andover House is listed below.
