This refers to the big waves that wash up on the coast on windless days during the summer Doyo period (the 18 days before the beginning of autumn). These are swells caused by typhoons far out at sea that often occur around this time, but in the past when there was no weather observation or forecasting system, Doyo waves were greatly feared and people were wary of them.
