Asabata Swamp

...The Asagi Lowlands to the north of the city are a basin-like marshland left behind by sedimentation, about 7m above sea level, with thick soft ground, which repeatedly floods during heavy rains. This lowland, drained by the Tomoe River, was home to the Asabata Marsh until the Meiji period, but was later turned into rice paddy fields through land improvement projects. Recently, as urbanization has progressed, housing complexes, distribution centers, sewage treatment plants, etc. have been built on the reclaimed land. …市街地北方の麻機低地は堆積作用からとり残された盆地状の沼沢地で，標高は約7m，軟弱地盤が厚く，豪雨時には湛水をくり返した。巴川によって排水されているこの低湿地には，明治期までは浅畑沼があったが，その後の土地改良事業によって水田化され，最近は市街地化がすすんで盛土の造成地に住宅団地，流通センター，下水処理場などが建設された。また盛土による造成は遊水池としての機能を減少させたため，1974年の七夕豪雨の際には浸水被害が大きかった。…
