Naphtha is thermally cracked to obtain useful compounds such as ethylene, propylene, and butadiene. After removing these compounds, the remaining C4 - C5 fraction (mainly the C5 fraction) or C5 - C9 fraction (mainly the C9 fraction) is polymerized in a mixed state to obtain a resin. The properties of the resulting resin vary depending on the composition ratio of the olefin fraction in the raw material, but it is a transparent, pale yellow to yellowish brown rosin-like resin with a molecular weight of 200-2000 and a softening point of 5-160°C. It is stable to acids and alkalis and has good water resistance. It dissolves well in various organic solvents. It is inexpensive, so it is widely used as a thickening agent for printing ink, a rubber compounding agent, a tackifier for adhesive tape, hot melt adhesives, paper sizing agents, paints, and waterproofing for cloth and concrete.
