Street Theater - Gaitoengeki

Japanese: 街頭演劇 - がいとうえんげき

It is an attempt to leave the traditional venue for theatrical performance, i.e. the theater, and explore new audiences outdoors. There are two possible forms for this. One is based on the theories of A. Artaud, who rebelled against the traditional European view of theater, and is an attempt to create a new aesthetic, similar to happenings. For example, in 1964, West German pop artist Wolf Vostell organized a street theater using the entire city of Ulm. The entire audience was put on a bus and taken to the city's airport, garages, swimming pool, garbage dump, and other places, where they rediscovered a space completely different from their everyday lives.

因襲的な演劇の場所すなわち劇場を離れて戸外で新しい観客を開拓しようとする試み。その形式には二つの流れが考えられる。一つは従来のヨーロッパの演劇観に反発したA.アルトーの理論に基づき，ハプニングと同じように新しい美学を創造しようとする試みで，例えば1964年西ドイツのポップ･アーティストのウォルフ･フォステルは，ウルム市全体を使って街頭演劇を構成した。観客は全員バスに乗せられて，同市の空港，ガレージ，プール，ごみ捨て場などを案内されてゆくうち，日常次元とはまったく違う空間を再発見するのである。
