A shallow bank in the central North Sea between Great Britain and Denmark. The name comes from the Dutch word for a two-masted North Sea fishing boat. At the 40m isobath, it is about 300km long and 130km wide at its widest point, with a shallow depth of 17-37m. It was formed when a huge moraine was submerged by a postglacial transgression, and its surface is covered with glacial deposits such as gravel, with mammoth fossils and peat widely distributed. It is a spawning ground for fish, making it a world-class fishing ground, and trawlers land mainly herring, cod, and flounder. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
