Italian bass-baritone. Born in Bologna. Studied vocal music in Rome and other places, won a prize at the Spoleto Vocal Competition in 1964 and made his debut there. He performed on stage mainly in Venice, but realized that his acting skills were not as good as his voice, so he received instruction from director Piero Faggioni (1936-). He then appeared at major opera houses in Italy, and made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1970. Mozart's Don Giovanni was his biggest hit, and he has sung it on stage under many directors, and in 1979, Joseph Losey directed an opera film starring him. His bright, soft, yet powerful voice is suitable for a wide range of roles. He first came to Japan in 1971 (Showa 46) to perform with the Italian Opera Company at the invitation of NHK.
