A town in Nishimorokata County in the southwest of Miyazaki Prefecture. It occupies the eastern slope of the Kirishima volcano, and is served by the Kitto Line and the Miyazaki Expressway. Field crops and dairy farming are thriving, and the western part of the town is part of the Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park, making it a base for mountain climbing.
