A town in Nishimorokata County in the southwest of Miyazaki Prefecture. It occupies the eastern slope of the Kirishima volcano, and is served by the Kitto Line and the Miyazaki Expressway. Field crops and dairy farming are thriving, and the western part of the town is part of the Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park, making it a base for mountain climbing. 宮崎県南西部，西諸県(にしもろかた)郡の町。霧島火山東斜面を占め，吉都(きっと)線，宮崎自動車道が通じる。畑作と酪農が盛んで，西部は霧島錦江湾国立公園に属し，登山基地。狭野(さの)神社は杉並木（天然記念物）で有名。85.39km2。１万人（2010）。
