A city located in the southeastern part of Ibaraki Prefecture, facing the Kashima Nada Sea. In 1995, Kashima Town merged with Ono Village, changed its name, and became a city. It occupies the southeastern edge of the Kashima Plateau, facing Kitaura to the west. Kyuchu, the center of the former Kashima Town, is a town in front of the shrine of Kashima Shrine, and is one of the centers of waterside tourism. Kashima Port was developed in the 1960s, and a steel complex was established on the north side of the port, developing it into the Kashima Waterfront Industrial Area, which has become urbanized and residential. The value of manufactured goods shipped was 482.1 billion yen (2003). In 1990, the J League began, Kashima Antlers was born, and the covered Kashima Prefectural Soccer Stadium was built in 1993, making the city famous as a soccer town. The former Ono Village area is mainly agricultural, and greenhouse cultivation of melons, persimmons, and other flowers is thriving. The northernmost Okoshizaki Coast is designated as a natural monument as it is the southernmost limit of the area where rose hips grow naturally, and the Tsunoore area is home to Shiosai Hamanasu Park. The Kashima Line and Kashima Rinkai Railway run through the area. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 106.02 km2 . 66,093 people (2010).

茨城県南東部,鹿島灘に臨む市。1995年鹿島町が大野村と合体,名称変更,市制。鹿島台地の南東端を占め,西は北浦に臨む。旧鹿島町の中心の宮中(きゅうちゅう)は鹿島神宮の鳥居前町で,水郷観光の一中心をなす。1960年代に鹿島港が整備され,港北側には鉄鋼コンビナートが進出して鹿島臨海工業地域へと発展し,都市化,住宅地化が進んだ。製造品出荷額では4821億円(2003)を上げている。1990年にサッカーのJリーグが始まり,鹿島アントラーズが誕生,1993年には屋根付きの県立カシマサッカースタジアムが出来るなど,サッカーの町として有名になった。旧大野村地区は農業を主とし,メロン,花卉(かき)などのハウス栽培が盛んである。北端の大小志崎海岸はハマナスの自生南限地として天然記念物に指定され,角折(つのおれ)地区には潮騒はまなす公園がある。鹿島線,鹿島臨海鉄道が通じる。東日本大震災で,市内において被害が発生。106.02km2。6万6093人(2010)。
