1887‐1958
A pro-Western Egyptian intellectual in the early 20th century. Known as Egypt's first Fabian Socialist, he advocated the importance of secular and scientific knowledge for humans. He began by writing Introduction to the Superman (1910) and was active in Egyptian journalism. Through his editing and writing for major magazines such as Hilal in the 1920s and 1930s, he introduced a wide range of Western thinkers and spoke out against the tyranny and oppression of the feudal landlord class. He participated in the formation of the Egyptian Socialist Party and the Egyptian Society for Scientific Education, and was actively involved as a Coptic Christian in the Muslim-led national political party, the Wafd Party.

20世紀初めのエジプトの親西欧派知識人。エジプト最初のフェビアン社会主義者として知られ，人間にとっての世俗的･科学的知識の重要性を唱えた。《超人序説》(1910)執筆を皮切りに，エジプト･ジャーナリズムで精力的に活躍。《ヒラール》など1920‐30年代の主要雑誌の編集や執筆を通じて，西欧の思想家を広く紹介するとともに，封建的地主層の専横と抑圧糾弾の論陣を張った。エジプト社会党やエジプト科学教育協会の結成に参画し，またムスリム主導の民族政党ワフド党にコプト教徒として積極的にかかわった。
