When sending telecommunication signals over long distances, amplifiers placed along the way are called repeaters. When transmitting information signals over cable or radio waves, the signal attenuates and weakens as the distance increases, so repeaters are inserted along the way to amplify the signal. Coaxial cables, which are widely used for long-distance communication, are repeated every 1.5 to 3 km, while microwave signals are repeated approximately every 50 km.
