1870‐1930 Spanish soldier and politician. Born into a distinguished family in Cadiz. Participated in campaigns in Morocco, Cuba, and the Philippines, and returned to Spain after defeat in the Spanish-American War in 1898. After serving in Morocco from 1909, he became commander of the Madrid Division. He was dismissed in the Senate for criticizing the Moroccan policy, and in 1922 was demoted to commander-in-chief of the Catalan region. After the recession and social unrest following World War I, when the civilian cabinet resigned en masse, he intervened in politics and performed a pronunciamiento in Barcelona in September 1923. With the approval of King Alfonso XIII, he succeeded in a coup d'état, dissolved parliament, and suspended the constitution. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
