Hailuoto Island (English spelling)

Japanese: ハイルオト[島]（英語表記）Hailuoto

An island in Finland located deep in the Gulf of Bothnia, off the coast of Oulu. It has an area of about 195 km2 and a population of 891 (1981). 62% of the island is forest and 8% is farmland, and 69% of the population works in agriculture and forestry, with fishing being an important side job. It first appeared on the surface of the Gulf of Bothnia, where uplift is active, about 2,000 years ago, and has continued to rise ever since, with the three islands now united into one. Its original name was Hairiluoto, meaning "an isolated island of little herrings," and fishermen have been living there since the early Middle Ages, following the little herrings.

ボスニア湾の奥，オウル市の沖にあるフィンランド領の島。面積約195km2，人口891(1981)。森が62％，畑が8％で，住民の69％が農業と林業に従事するが，漁業も重要な副業となっている。隆起の盛んなボスニア湾の海面に初めて姿を見せたのが約2000年前，その後も隆起は続き，三つの島が今では一つになった。〈小ニシンの離れ小島〉を意味するハイリルオトが元の名で，小ニシンを追って，中世初期の頃から漁師が住みついた。
