Requiem shark (English spelling)

Japanese: メジロザメ(目白鮫) - メジロザメ（英語表記）requiem shark

A general term for marine fish of the genus Carcharhinus, family Carcharhinidae, order Carcharhiniformes. The name comes from the fact that the eyes are covered with a whitish nictitating membrane. There are over 100 species recorded in the genus Carcharhinus, but a recent review revealed that 30 species are distributed worldwide. According to the list of fish names found in Japan, 15 species are found in the waters near Japan, including the spinner shark Carcharhinus brevipinna , the sand shark C. dussumieri , the silky shark C. falciformis , the whitetip shark C. longimanus , the blacktip reef shark C. melanopterus , the reef shark C. plumbeus , and the orb shark C. sorrah .

メジロザメ目メジロザメ科メジロザメ属の海産魚の総称。眼が白っぽい瞬膜（しゆんまく）におおわれることに由来した名称。メジロザメ属には100種以上の種の記載があるが，最近整理されて30種が世界に分布することがわかった。日本産魚名リストによれば，日本近海にはハナザメCarcharhinus brevipinna，スミツキザメC.dussumieri，クロトガリザメC.falciformis，ヨゴレザメC.longimanus，ツマグロC.melanopterus，ヤジブカ(メジロザメ)C.plumbeus，ホウライザメC.sorrahなど15種が分布する。
