A newspaper published only on Sundays. Generally, daily newspapers in the UK and the US are published on weekdays, from Monday to Saturday, and the only way to read a newspaper on Sundays is to rely on a Sunday newspaper. After the Puritan Revolution in 1642, a law was passed in England prohibiting commercial activities on Sunday, which was the Sabbath, and especially during the reign of Charles II, fines were imposed on those who sold newspapers on Sundays. In this social background, the first Sunday newspaper was published by Elizabeth Johnson, who founded The British Gazette and Sunday Monitor in 1779. Following this, four Sunday newspapers, including the famous Observer, were published by 1791. In response, religious leaders tried to prevent the publication of Sunday newspapers, but they were unsuccessful because Sunday newspapers were widely accepted by British workers who wanted entertainment and news on their days off. The News of the World and the Sunday Mirror are representative popular Sunday newspapers in the UK, while quality papers include the Sunday Times, the Observer, and the Sunday Telegraph. In the US, unlike in the UK, daily newspapers often publish Sunday newspapers under different titles. There are no Sunday newspapers in Japan, but since the mid-1960s, as sales competition intensified, major newspapers have published Sunday editions (Sunday supplements) as an add-on. The British Gazette and Sunday Monitorを創刊した。
