It is often used in a similar sense to continental climate, referring to the climate in places far from the coast, but it is a climate type used for something a little smaller in scale (area) than continental climate itself. Specifically, it is a type that is intermediate between the Pacific coastal climate and the Sea of Japan coastal climate in the climate classification of Japan. In the climate classification by Takeshi Sekiguchi (1959), which classifies areas based on temperature and precipitation, the Kitakami region, the Central Highlands, and the Iga region, which are part of the transitional climate zone, roughly correspond to an inland climate.
