On the night of December 5, 1861 (January 15, 1861), Henry CJ Heusken, a Dutchman who was an interpreter for the American ambassador to Japan, Harris, was murdered by anti-foreigner samurai. Heusken, who was working as an interpreter for the Prussian envoys during treaty negotiations, was attacked on his way back on horseback from the Akabane reception hall to the American embassy at Zenpukuji in Azabu.
