…General during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Former Han Dynasty. Born in Pingyang (Linfen County, Shanxi Province), his courtesy name was Zhongqing. He was an illegitimate son of Wei, a concubine of the Marquis of Pingyang, but when his sister, Wei Zifu (later Empress Wei), gained the Emperor's favor, he also served at the court and was recognized by the Emperor for his talent. In 130 BC (Yuanguang 5), he became General of the Chariots and Cavalry, and in the 11 years since, he defeated the Xiongnu seven times, achieving brilliant military feats. For these achievements, he was made Marquis of Changping in 127 BC (Yuanshuo 2), and in 124 BC, he was given the titles of Grand General and Grand Sima. …
