Sculpin - Sculpin

Japanese: カジカ(鰍) - カジカ

It refers to a general term for fish belonging to the Cottidae family of the Scorpaenidae order, or to one of these species. The Cottidae family has undergone remarkable species differentiation, with over 110 species recorded in the waters off Japan. Their habitats are extremely diverse, ranging from freshwater to coastal tide pools and deep seas over 1,000 meters deep. Common characteristics of many species include two dorsal fins on the body, the anal fin facing the second dorsal fin, large pectoral fins, and a spine facing backwards on the preoperculum in front of the dorsal fin.

カサゴ目カジカ科Cottidaeに属する魚類の総称，またはその1種を指す。カジカ科は種分化が著しく，日本近海にも110種以上が記録されている。淡水域から沿岸の潮だまりや1000mを超す深海まで生息域はきわめて多様である。ふつう体には2基の背びれがあり，しりびれは第2背びれと向かい合う位置にあり，大きな胸びれをもち，その前方の前鰓蓋骨（ぜんさいがいこつ）には後方に向くとげがあることなどが多くの種に共通した特徴としてあげられる。
