The gray wolf, Canis lupus (illustration), also known as the gray wolf or timber wolf, was once widely distributed throughout Europe, Asia, North America, and Mexico, but has now almost disappeared from most of Western Europe and the United States, and is extinct in the UK, Poland, Switzerland, Hokkaido, and other places. Its body length is 82-160cm, tail length 30-50cm, shoulder height 55-97cm, and weight 15-82kg; females are slightly smaller than males.
