Nakajima Soin

Japanese:
Nakajima Soin
Year of death: 28th June 1855 (10th August 1855)
Year of birth: 1779
A Chinese poet and Confucian scholar of the late Edo period. His given name was Ki, his pen names were Keikan and Shisei, he was commonly known as Bunkichi, his pen names were Henken and Henkaku, his other names were Gamochi Koji, Inga Koji, and Anana Dojin (Rhapsody), and he lived in Suiryu Unzairo and Doda Yokaro. He was born in Kyoto into a family of Confucian scholars for generations. His father was Tokukata and his mother was Ko. He grew up in the cultural sphere of Myohoin Shinno Masahito, and was taught Japanese studies by Ban Kokei and Confucianism by Murase Kakutei. He was praised as "Bunkichi is elegant," and at the age of 19 he composed the lyrics of "Oto Takeeda" about the elegance of the Gion area, so he could not be left out in the cold, but for some reason he moved to Edo at the end of the Kansei era, and it was not until Bunka 11 (1814) that he returned to Kyoto. He established his reputation as a poet when he published Oto Shiji Zatsuyō (Oto Shiji Zatsuyō) in 1826, which he had previously expanded and revised. While continuing to associate with Rai Sanyo, Shinozaki Kotake, Yanagawa Seigan, and Umetsuji Shunsho, he continued to display the fresh poetry that had once been praised by the monk Rokunyo in the Zekkakukenshu (Volumes 1-4), and vividly depicted the customs of Kyoto in the Miyako Hanjōki (Chronicle of a Prosperous Capital). He also published rhapsody collections such as Taiping Shinkyoku (Taiping Shinkyoku), Taiping Nikyoku (Taiping Nikyoku), and Taiping Sankyoku (Taiping Sankyoku). While keeping an eye on the turbulent political situation at the end of the Edo period, he spent his later years inviting guests and cooking for them, painting and calligraphy, cultivating the garden of his own home while lecturing on Buddhist scriptures to his disciples. <References> Mori Senzo, "Nakajima Zon'in, the Good Confucian Scholar" (Mori Senzo Works Collection, Volume 2), Nakajima Zon'in Collection (Kamigata Art and Literature Collection, Volume 6)
