Tales of the Alhambra

After spending about 10 years in his home country, he served as minister to Spain for four years from 1842. His familiarity with Spanish culture resulted in works such as "The Conquest of Granada" (1829), which he described as "a cross between history and romance," and the exotic "The Tale of the Alhambra" (1832). He continued to write prolifically until his later years, completing works such as "A Voyage to the Great Plains" (1835), a travelogue of the Oklahoma region, and "The Life of George Washington" in five volumes (1855-59).
