Anrakuji Temple

Japanese: 安楽寺 - あんらくじ

Located in Bessho Onsen, Ueda City, Nagano Prefecture, this temple belongs to the Soto sect of Buddhism. It is called Sufukuyama Gokokuin. The principal image is Shaka Nyorai. It is said to have been founded in the Heian period as one of the three temples, Anraku-ji, Joraku-ji, and Choraku-ji, of which Anraku-ji and Joraku-ji remain today. In 1288 (Shoo 1), Hojo Tokiyori invited Shokoku Isen to re-found the temple, and in the Momoyama period, Takayama Junso changed the sect from Rinzai to Soto. Under the patronage of the Hojo clan, the temple flourished most during the Kamakura period. The three-story octagonal pagoda on the mountainside is in the pure Zen style and is designated as a national treasure. The statues of monk Isen and the second monk Enin are designated as important national cultural properties, and the wheel storage and sutra storage are designated as city cultural properties.

Anrakuji Temple Octagonal Three-story Pagoda
A three-story pagoda on the mountainside at the back of the Anrakuji Temple grounds. It is the only octagonal pagoda still standing in Japan. It is said to have been built in the Kamakura period. Its thatched roof and the braiding of each tier suggest that it is built in a pure Zen Buddhist style. It has a four-tiered roof so that a skirt tier can be added to the first tier. 長野県上田市別所温泉にあり、曹洞(そうとう)宗に属する寺。崇福山護国院と号する。本尊は釈迦如来。平安時代に安楽、常楽、長楽の三楽寺の一つとして創建されたと伝え、現在は安楽寺と常楽寺が残る。1288年（正応1）北条時頼(ときより)が樵谷惟仙(しょうこくいせん)を招いて中興開山とし、桃山時代に高山順宗が臨済(りんざい)宗より曹洞宗に改めた。北条氏の外護(げご)を受けて鎌倉時代にもっとも栄えた。山腹にある八角三重塔は純粋な禅宗様式で、国宝に指定。惟仙和尚(おしょう)像、第2世の恵仁(えにん)和尚像は国の重要文化財、輪蔵(りんぞう)および経蔵は市指定文化財。
